Autumn 1 - Set in Stone

The children will be travelling back in time to imagine what it was like to grow up in the Stone Age.  They will also spend some time comparing their life now to what life was like then.  In art we will begin the year by looking at how painting has developed and changed throughout history, beginning with Stone Age cave painting and finishing with the work of Hundertwasser who is famous for painting on buildings.  The children will paint their own designs which will be displayed in the playground.  These will then be shown as an art exhibition which parents and the children will be invited to attend.

Autumn 2 & Spring 1 - Life in the Freezer

Our Science and Geography is ‘Life in the Freezer ‘.  The children will be looking at conditions in the Arctic and comparing it to our local area. They will be studying Arctic animals, their habitats and what it is like for Inuits to live in this environment.  Our English is based on the book ‘Ice Trap’. This is a true story about Shackleton’s last adventure to the Antarctic.  The children will be writing letters, writing recounts and making television and radio broadcasts based on the book.

Spring 2 - Under the Skin

In this Science-focused term we will be looking at what lies beneath our skin; the human skeleton, our muscles and joints and how exercise affects the body. 

Summer 1 - Romans

We will be looking at Celtic life and the Roman influences on British society.  We will be having a ‘Roman Day’ in school and a real Roman will visit. In Art the children will be looking at a variety of Roman Mosaics and creating their own. Also we will be looking at Roman sculpture culminating in the children designing and making their own tile.  Our English is linked to the Romans.   We will be researching and writing non-chronological reports about Roman life. 

Summer 2 - What's the Attraction

The children will be looking at forces in science. Using their knowledge, they will make magnet games for year twos. In English they will be writing instructions for these games.  There will be a big emphasis on transition and our children will be working with the year twos in maths as well as in DT.
