In Science the children learn all about the world in which they live. In lower KS2, years 3 and 4, children learn about the functions of plants, exploring the conditions they need to grow strong and healthy.  They also learn to recognise how dark is the absence of light and how light is needed for us to see as well as understanding how forces and magnets attract and repel different materials.  These children will also learn about the functions of the digestive system and construct food chains by identifying predators, producers and prey.

In upper KS2, years 5 and 6, children learn to identify and describe differences in the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds.  Children in year 5 complete a unit about Earth and Space, describing the movement of the Earth, Sun and Moon inside our solar system.  Year 6 identify and name parts of the human circulatory system, describing the functions of the heart, the blood vessels and the blood inside a human being.  These children will also go on to recognise how living things have changed over time, identifying how animals and plants have adapted, and continue to adapt to suit their ever changing environments.

As much as possible, children experience ‘real life’, hands on activities which bring Science to life.  Children learn how to observe differences and changes over time, how to create and conduct a fair test, how to research to find answers to science questions and then to classify their new found knowledge and identify patterns in their data. 

20% of the UK workforce depends on science skills to do their job, the Science curriculum we create at Downs Junior school helps our children on the pathway to become part of that 20%.


In 2019, 98% of pupils achieved ARE in Science at the end of Key stage 2 which is significantly above national average and in the highest 20% of school.
