Science
Intent
At Downs Junior School, we recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We strongly believe that all children should be learning science through active investigations and enquiry based learning. The children learn all about the world in which they live and, as much as possible, they experience ‘real life’, hands on activities, including trips and visitors. We aim to develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment.
Our science teaching offers opportunities for children to:
- Develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery.
- Develop their understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through the use of different types of enquiry
- Build upon firm foundations and their own prior knowledge, developing a strong awareness of themselves and the world around them.
- Ask (and answer) scientific questions about the world around them.
- Be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
- Use a range of methods to communicate their scientific information and present it in a systematic, scientific manner, including diagrams, graphs and charts.
We try to ensure that the science curriculum we provide will give children the confidence and motivation to continue to further develop their skills into the next stage of their education and life experiences.
