Art Curriculum Intent
Throughout their time at Downs, children will explore, experiment with and refine skills in a range of artistic techniques. Children are encouraged to use colour, pattern, texture, line, tone, shape, form and space as well as different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through the use of sketchbooks, pupils experiment with new techniques and gather ideas for their compositions, stimulating their creativity and imagination.
Children will be able to develop individual ideas and through discussion of their own, others’ and artists’ work, make informed judgements and practical decisions to produce thoughtful and unique outcomes. Children will learn the essential role that art, craft and design plays not only in their own lives but the lives of others. We will be looking at diverse artists’ practices from different cultures, periods and movements as well as utilising and engaging with our local area and resources to contextualise the work and learning.
We hold an art and design week where the whole school takes part in a variety of enrichment activities.
