Music is taught by a specialist teacher in a dedicated and well-equipped music room: There is a drum kit, a bass and electric guitar, a half-class set of keyboards and a large range of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments.

The children experience a weekly one-hour lesson and the content incorporates composition, performance, listening and appraisal skills. The main aim of every lesson is to develop these skills, build confidence and most importantly have FUN! The subject material often links with topics that are being studied in their year group, looking at different periods of time and a variety of genres, cultures and styles.  Please follow the link below, to our Music Website, for a more in-depth look at the Music curriculum  https://www.downsjuniormusic.com/curriculum.html

We currently have two choirs in school – Singing Squad (Years 3 – 5) and Super Choir (Year 6 only). Due to demand this may be extended to three choirs. Choirs rehearse during lunchtime

We also have an orchestra for children in school who are able to read basic sheet music notation and receive regular lessons for their instrument.

We currently also have a ‘jam club’ and ‘gig club’ for children in Years 5 and 6. These clubs allow the children the musical freedom to collaborate with each other and share musical ideas as they aim to write songs and compose pieces of music with their friends.

Previously children in Year 4 have experienced a performance at the world famous Glyndebourne Opera House. Also in October we have a Harvest assembly followed by commemorative events for Remembrance Day in November. The festive months of November and December include the ‘Super Choir’ performance at the Brighton Centre alongside nearly 2,000 children from schools all over Brighton and Hove, Christmas Concerts in school and Christmas Nativity Productions. The Battle of the Bands competition occurs in March and there are termly after-school instrumental and solo concerts. In the summer term the whole school unite for the opening and closing ceremonies for Sports Day, many children participate in The Brighton Festival Children’s Parade and the Year 6 children delight audiences by performing adapted stage musicals as a farewell to their junior school experience.
