Art

Throughout their time at Downs, children will explore, experiment with and refine skills in a range of artistic techniques. Children are encouraged to use colour, pattern, texture, line, tone, shape, form, space as well as different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think.

Through the use of sketchbooks, we believe that we are able to stimulate pupil creativity and imagination. Children will be able to develop individual ideas, make reasoned choices and through discussion of their own, others’ and artists’ work, make informed judgements and practical decisions to produce thoughtful and unique outcomes.

Children will learn the part that art, craft and design plays in their own and others’ lives in different times and cultures.  We will be looking at artists works from different countries, periods and movements as well as utilising and engaging with our local area and resources to contextralise our work and learning.

We hold an art week where the whole school take part in a variety of art activities, exploring textiles, clay making, sketching, painting and photography to name a few.
